Ring slings - the basics:
Ring slings are made of a long piece of fabric, with two strong rings sewn onto one end. The loose end, called the 'tail' of the sling, is threaded through the rings to form a loop. The fabric can be pulled through the rings to loosen or tighten the sling, but once in place, the sling is securely held in place by tension. The adjustability ring slings offer, makes them really supportive and versatile. they can be used from birth (even premature babies) to toddler, and can usually be shared by different sized caregivers. Once the sling has been threaded (which you only have to do once), it is really easy to pop over your shoulder and slip the baby in and out as often as you wish. If your baby falls asleep in the sling, you can gently lay them down in the sling, and remove it without waking them up. Ring slings can have 'open' or 'closed' tails. This refers to the shape of the loose end of the sling, which can be wide and 'open', or sewn into a taper - 'closed'. The open tailed slings have a distinctive 'floaty' style, but if you prefer a neater look, you can tuck the tail around the rings so it doesn't hang down. The open tail is also handy as a nursing cover or sunshade, or for mopping up spit-ups! We currently stock open tailed ring slings. Ring slings are also brilliant for breastfeeding. Younger babies can be fed in a cradle carry, by lowering the inner rail to offer access to the breast. or in the rugby carry with the baby's head away from the rings. Older babies can feeding the tummy to tummy or hip carry positions.
Ring slings offer a variety of natural, comfortable positions in which to carry your baby or toddler, which vary depending on baby's age. It is possible to move the baby from one carrying position to another without removing the sling.
Newborns love the cradle carry (with head towards the rings for a more upright position, or feet to rings for a more horizontal position. Some babies are only happy completely upright, and the tummy to tummy position is perfect for them. some mums like the 'rugby' position, especially when breastfeeding.
Older babies and toddlers tend to prefer a hip carry, back carry, or a 'safety' hip carry, which is a hip carry where the baby sits further back on the hip, with mum or dads arm in front of them, keeping curious hands at bay!
Toddlers like to be able to get down and walk, but then be picked up again often, for a cuddle, or because their little legs get tired. That's no problem with a ring sling, they are designed for quick and simple positioning.
Ring slings are designed so that the baby's weight is distributed down the wearer's back, allowing baby to be carried comfortably for long periods. However, if you have a very heavy baby or child, or known back problems, you may find a two-shouldered sling more comfortable.
